How Wearing My Natural Hair to Work Became More Than Just A Style

When I started in Corporate America, I was told a few times that when I wore my straight weave, I looked very put together. However, when I wore my natural hair out, I was not told those things. Rude. Those comments left me uneasy that a texture other than mine created a perception of professionalism that was ” more well-kept” than my own. After those comments, I made very intentional efforts not to wear those silky smooth Brazilian bundles to the workplace. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with Brazilian or any other straight weave. However this has been my decision after my experiences. So now I diligently practice natural updos, twist outs, slick buns, and rod sets to wear into work. I use Sundays to prepare my coils to make their statement in Corporate America for the week.

Wearing my natural hair to work became more than just a style.

People use their clothes, demeanor, and/or rhetoric to craft how they want the world to see them. I planned to do just the same with my hair at work. I knew that for the corner of this earth my coworkers would get a dose of this natural hair when I’m in the office.

Even now, I’m at a point where I actually don’t want to wear my hair straight. I can typically predict the comments that would come with that. As I progress in my career, I believe that I take on a role for those around me to see that their hair can look PROFESSIONAL in it’s most natural state.

Some people may think this is not a big deal. Some may think that people don’t experience issues when wearing their natural hair at work. If you think that’s the case, check out the CROWN ACT study.

It was shortly after having started in Corporate America, I realized I will use my hair to create a statement… That natural hair is professional.

Back in 2017, I committed to sharing my journey of trying natural styles out in the office. I committed to sharing hair styles, clothing styles, and my journey in corporate America with women who look like me. Ultimately, my goal has been to inspire someone to feel more comfortable with embracing their hair in professional settings. And my hope is for you to inspire someone in the office too!
