Since I’ve been in the office, I’ve realized that I keep pulling for specific items that have been on rotation during the cold weather months. If you’re struggling with looking good and staying warm, this article will help you with what items you can integrate into your winter capsule wardrobe to accomplish just that!

These items are basics so, likely, you may already have these pieces in your wardrobe. I also love to layer during the winter. This styling technique of course serves two purposes. Keeping you warm all while adding additional interest to a basic outfit.

WINTER TOPS

Next, let’s move to tops. I’ve been LOVING clean cut turtlenecks. There’s so much that you can do with them. You can wear them on their own, wear them underneath botton ups, and you can of course wear them underneath blazers. And that’s just a few examples.

WINTER BOTTOMS

As for botthms, I really like to be comfortable. Honestly, in general I’m all for comfort. So I want to share with you the most comfortable line of pants at Express, which I’ve included below. I also love to wear culottes with boots or culottes with tights and a heel. Culottes are perfect because they give you space to feel comfortable with your layered bottoms and room to move freely when you pair the bottoms with boots. And finally denim which are really the best to wear during cold months to help stay warm. I will say that since most of my denim are really fitted I like to wear them on days when I don’t have on additional layers so I don’t feel extremely uncomfortable.

WINTER HATS

My preference for winter hats is that whatever hat that I’m wearing on a consistent basis, it MUST HAVE a satin interior lining.

Finally to top the look off, are our beloved winter coats. What I’d recommend for coats are neutral tones to incoproate into your winter capsule wardrobe. The reason why I love investing in a nice neutral coat is because you can get so much wear out of it. You can of course mix a neutral coat with a colorful outfit or with a neutral tone outfit. So this piece goes a long way and can be paired across the board.

UNDERGARMENTS

I’m sure so many of you wore long johns growing up! Well, integrating adult like “long john” pieces are so so important to staying warm without looking ridiculous! Each day I typically wear 1 additional layer under my cloths, or if it’s super cold, I incorporate 2 layers. And MAN, let me tell you, you may even break a good sweat. My staple undergarments include: fluffy socks, an insulated top and insulated leggings.

I absolutely adore The Fold London. I have spoken a few times about how I want to invest in quality pieces that I will be able to get various wear out of for an extended period of time. And The Fold London is one of those workwear brands that I can do just that.

As you can see, I love blazer and jacket pieces. The majority of us could agree that 2020 has shifted our work experience in more ways than one. Last year shifted our rules and norms, and this completely translates to what we put on too. For those working from home, wearing blazers with sweatpants at the bottom or no pants at all (LOL) had become quite normal. And you know what, that’s okay!

I have always and continue to advocate for women to challenge societal norms of professionalism, whether that’s hairstyles or certain pieces of clothing. When I learned about M.M.LaFleur’s REWRITE THE RULES line, I knew this stood for everything regarding workwear that I have always vouched for. In this post I will share 4 styles for work that aren’t typically “professional.” I will also show you how to debunk these workwear myths by styling each piece professionally. COLORFUL SUITS FOR WORK

Historically, neutral colors are typically what most people think when they think of a professional color palette. Don’t get me wrong I love a neutral suit! However, try a tone that you feel comfortable and love and get that in your favorite suit.

Tip: If you wear a colorful suit, I’d tone down any selected accessories so that the suit is the focal point and that there’s not too much going on with your outfit. I tend to gravitate towards colors that are not too loud or bright. However, try out a color that you love, and see how you feel. You may never go back to a black or beige suit again!

SLEEVELESS TOPS FOR WORK

This is a workwear myth that I’ve actually never understood, which is to not wear your shoulders or full arm out. I’m not complete sure how wearing your upper arms out is unprofessional. However, when it’s warm out, I’ve recently started wearing dressy sleeveless tops. And, whew, it makes a huge difference in how I feel and my comfort during these warm months.

TIP: If you wear a sleeveless top, I’d pair it with trousers or a midi or longer length skirt. Since your full arm is out, I would recommend a fuller pant or skirt to balance the total amount of skin shown with this piece.

DRESSES WITH SNEAKERS FOR WORK

This one is a bit informal and one that I would not recommend for all dress codes. However, if your office dress code is more casusal, I would recommend pairing a dress with sneakers, this truly tones down the look and gives the outfit more of a business casual feel.

TIP: I’d wear a dress right above the knee or longer. I’d also pair the dress with a dressier sneaker, versus a running sneaker.

JUMPSUITS FOR WORK

Finally, last but not least, my absolute favorite a JUMPSUIT! To be honest with you, I don’t think I’ve necessarily heard that jumpsuits aren’t appropriate for the workplace. I actually think a lot of people may not know how to style them professionally. I love jumpsuits for any occasion. And I think they are absolutely appropriate for any dress code depending on the style of the jumpsuit.

TIP: There are so many different styles of jumpsuits! If you work in a more formal environment pair a wide legged or fitted jumpsuit with a blazer. If you work in a more business casual environment wear a jumpsuit on it’s own or with a coordinated cardigan.

Many have heard of the term “capsule wardrobe”, but not everyone knows its origin or how exactly to achieve it.

There’s no need to worry, it’s easier than you might think!

A capsule wardrobe is a concept that has shifted in meaning and motive since its creation back in the 1970s. Author and wardrobe consultant Susie Faux is credited with first coining the term, but the concept of the capsule wardrobe did not become well known until 1985 when Donna Karan created the first capsule collection.

So, what exactly is a capsule wardrobe today?

The concept of the capsule wardrobe has been revised countless times with brands and influencers such as InStyle, Un-Fancy, and Courtney Carver giving us many ways to apply this idea to our own lives.

Put simply, a capsule wardrobe is a condensed collection of quality clothing that is ACTUALLY worn and loved by its owner. The fundamental concepts behind capsule wardrobes are minimalism, intention, and versatility.

If you require guidance, there are plenty of capsule wardrobe programs that you can follow such as the Un-Fancy Challenge, Project 333, or the 10×10 Challenge, to name a few.

Less Is More

Minimalism is one of the foundational principles of creating capsule wardrobes. Typically, this kind of wardrobe consists of anywhere from 33 to 37 articles of clothing and accessories.

Frightening, right? It doesn’t have to be.

Now, I know the idea of drastically reducing your closet size sounds daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. There are many popular tips for effectively paring down your closet. Organization expert Marie Condo suggests that you only keep items that “spark joy”.  

Fashion designer Misha Nonoo advises that you turn all the hangers in your closet backward, and what you do not turn forward by the end of the season, you get rid of.

Additionally, lifestyle blogger Caroline Rector advocates that you should remove EVERYTHING from your closet so that you can see your wardrobe with a fresh set of eyes.

Whatever you prefer, make sure it fits your lifestyle and needs. 

Whichever you choose, the thing to remember is that there isn’t one right or wrong way to do it. You may follow a plan that includes shoes and accessories in your limited number of items. Or you might prefer Style Bee’s 10×10 Challenge where accessories aren’t included.

Countless benefits have been touted alongside the capsule wardrobe. Some of which include, clarity in outfit selections (you only own pieces that can be paired easily and always look good), more time for what you find important (not your closet), helps support the environment (say goodbye to fast fashion), and you’ll specifically define your style (you’ll only be left with the best items from your closet). Not to mention, you save money!

Now, how do you maintain a capsule wardrobe?

Many of us enjoy shopping, but often we end up with clothing articles that don’t really fit who we are. Maintaining your capsule wardrobe is important for this reason. 

Ways to combat this frustration are to refrain from shopping during the “pare down” phase of your capsule wardrobe. Next, avoid fast fashion as much as possible, or resort to limited items that you LOVE and are quality pieces. Lastly, select pieces that are extremely versatile like jumpsuits, jeans, blazers, trousers, and bags.
